Working with the crazy dogs of Batz Farm

Yesterday I had the amazing experience of visiting Batz Farms to work with their two 8 mo Lab/GSD mixes Lucy & Belle. The Batz Farm is a 16-acre agrotourism hot spot where they do farm tours, rent out a cabin on the property and host special events such as baby goat cuddling, but more on that later.

They called because these girls were so out of control that their young son Tristan was afraid to go outside to play with them because they would keep jumping on him and knocking him down. They had not had a lead on since they brought them to the farm at 8 weeks.

Tristan with Lucy

We worked with one dog at a time on the Silent Loose Lead Walk & Focus Drill and then various family members were amazed that they would not jump even when they were provoked to do so. Jumping on someone means the dog does not respect that person or their space. Once you lead the dog, they know you are higher ranking and will show respect. Now Tristan even can walk them…. like a boss.

So, within about 40 minutes we had two calm dogs and the family was amazed. Then they got walked at the same time.

My day got even better when they invited me into the barn to snuggle days old baby goats. It was so awesome and therapeutic. Growing up in a farm community, riding and bailing hay, just smelling the barn brings back such awesome memories. Even though I hope not to have to come back for the dogs, I will be back with my family for the goats.
