Lead vs Leash

A “lead” implies directing or guiding. A “leash” focuses on restraint or control. The difference may sound subtle. Which one do you think is more likely to promote a healthy, positive relationship? One allows you to show the dog how to avoid negative consequences by you leading, the other puts them in a position of having to choose for themselves what is a threat or resource. In the absence of leadership the dog is naturally going to lead. If you allow a child to lead you they are going to point you towards what they believe is worth focusing on. This is fine in your yard, not on a busy street. The same is true for the dog. If you allow them to be in charge of small things you are conditioning them to be in charge of all things. We need to guide them through the world, not let them lead and see what happens.
