Harley the “aggressive” Pit

Harley is a 9 year old female pit with a pretty extensive “bite” history. Most people don’t realize that most bites are actually only nips. Dogs nip to warn and create space between them and the threat. Its like you pushing someone away from you with open hands. Just like people, most dogs don’t go beyond that to a real bite. The issue is that a nip from a Pit and Chihuahua are two different things.

Harley’s first bite was about 6 years ago when she nipped a child in the face requiring plastic surgery. Most recently she nipped he face of a friend and removed a chunk of flesh from her face. It was my friend who had the owner contact me.

Like many dogs who are reactive like Harley, she lacks confidence in herself and her pack leader. This was most apparent when she attempted to control the front door of the house and every subsequent space. Even when pushed I could only get her to nip and retreat.

After the first loose leash walk of her life I had he do a full 5 minute Focus Drill only yards from the Rail Trail. The result of having her focus on me while moving and stationary was that she saw me as a pack leader and was able to relax. She will need more work but I am very proud of her progress after just one appointment.
